How To Be a Good Driver

No matter what age you are when you learn to drive there are tried and true rules to being a good driver. And these can serve as a good reminder to even the most seasoned drivers.


Being a good driver requires a combination of knowledge, skill, and attitude. Here are some tips to help you be a good driver:

1. Know the rules of the road:

Make sure you are familiar with all traffic laws and regulations in your area. This includes speed limits, right-of-way rules, and signaling requirements.

2. Practice good driving habits:

Always wear your seatbelt, use your turn signals, and maintain a safe following distance from other vehicles. Avoid distractions such as texting or eating while driving. If you are driving a car that is new to you make sure you learn adjust the mirrors, locate signals and emergency features and check to see you have a full charge on your battery.

3. Stay alert:

Pay attention to your surroundings and be prepared to react to changing traffic conditions. Keep a lookout for pedestrians, bicycles, and other vehicles. And plan your route in advance if you are going on a long trip.

Avoid road rage and try to remain calm in stressful driving situations. If someone else is behaving aggressively on the road, do your best to stay out of their way and avoid a confrontation. You could try listening to music that keeps you in a good mood while you drive.

Never drink and drive or operate a vehicle while under the influence of drugs. Always designate a driver if you have a group. Or if you are on your own call a cab or public ride share to get you home. Remember you are not just saving your own life, you are saving the lives of innocent people that could be affected by your decision.

6. Keep your vehicle in good condition:

Regularly maintain your vehicle to ensure it is safe to drive. This includes keeping the tires properly inflated, checking the brakes and fluid levels, and making sure all lights are working.
